Combi boiler installation — and whether a combi is right for your house
A combi suits most homes. It does not suit all of them, and we would rather tell you that at the survey than after we’ve fitted one.
What a combi actually changes
A combi heats water on demand, so there is no hot water cylinder and no cold water tank in the loft. That frees up an airing cupboard and usually a good part of the loft, and you stop paying to keep a tank of water hot that you may not use.
When a combi is the right call
Most one and two bathroom homes, where hot water is rarely needed in two places at once, and where the incoming mains flow rate is good enough to supply it. That last part is the one nobody checks over the phone, and it is the difference between a combi that performs and one that disappoints you every morning.
When it isn’t
Larger homes running two or three bathrooms simultaneously, houses with poor mains pressure or flow, and homes with several traditional showers that rely on stored hot water. In those cases a system boiler with a cylinder is usually the better answer, and we’ll say so.
Converting from a system or regular boiler
A conversion is more work than a straight swap. The cylinder and tanks come out, pipework is capped and rerouted, and the space they occupied is made good. It is worth knowing that up front because it is a real difference in both time and price, and a quote that hasn’t accounted for it will change on the day.
The survey settles it
We measure your mains flow rate and pressure, count the bathrooms and outlets, check the existing pipework and the flue route, and then tell you which type of boiler your house should have — before we quote anything.
What our work actually looks like
Why the filter and the flush matter more than the boiler brand
Every old system carries iron sludge. If it isn’t flushed out, it circulates through your brand-new boiler from day one — and it is one of the most common reasons a manufacturer refuses a warranty claim.
We power flush the whole system first. The machine uses magnets to pull the iron out until the water runs clear. Then we fit a magnetic filter so anything that forms later is caught before it reaches the boiler.
It’s the difference between a boiler that gives you trouble in year three and one that doesn’t. Both are included as standard — and both are worth looking for on any other quote you get.
“Very honest opinion regarding boiler and not pushing to buy product, very helpful.”
Jag Patel · verified Google review
Jag didn’t buy a boiler. He called about his hot water cutting out; the 22-Step Survey found the fault was his shower, so Oliver told him that instead of selling him one.
